Stretching about 30 kilometres along Phang Nga Province's coast, Khao Lak is less a single town than a series of connected villages — Khuk Khak, Bang Niang, Nang Thong, Bang Sak — each with its own character and beach. The sea here is calm and swimmable from October to April, and the backdrop of national-park hills means there are waterfalls and jungle trails within short reach.
Similan Islands are the main draw for divers and snorkellers: nine granite-boulder islands with visibility that regularly exceeds 20 metres. Liveaboards depart from Tab Lamu Pier, and day-trip speedboats run throughout the open season (approximately October to May — the park closes in the wet months). The Surin Islands and Richelieu Rock are also accessible from Khao Lak for those chasing manta rays and whale sharks.
Getting to Khao Lak from Koh Samui
Khao Lak is on the Andaman coast, so there is no direct ferry from Koh Samui. The most practical option is to take our Koh Samui to Surat Thani ferry, then continue by bus or minivan west through Phang Nga — around four to five hours total. Accommodation ranges from simple beach bungalows to comfortable resorts; most are small-scale and owner-run, which is a large part of the appeal. Book the Similan Islands liveaboards well in advance — popular vessels fill months ahead in high season.
