Koh Phangan Travel Guide

Koh Phangan has long outgrown its Full Moon Party reputation. The island delivers excellent snorkelling, jungle yoga retreats, quiet coves on its northern and eastern shores, and some of the finest sunsets in the Gulf — all reachable on a short ferry hop from Koh Samui or a direct crossing from Surat Thani.

Koh Phangan Travel Guide

Most visitors land first at Thong Sala, the main town and pier on the southwest coast. From there the island fans out in every direction. Haad Rin at the southern tip is where the Full Moon Party happens each month — a beach rave that draws thousands — but even Haad Rin is calm and pleasant between events. The beaches along the north coast, particularly Haad Khuat (Bottle Beach), are reachable only by longtail and reward the effort with clear water and very few people.

The interior is largely forested and hilly. The Than Sadet-Ko Pha-ngan National Park covers much of it, and the waterfall walks here are rewarding. The east coast village of Thong Nai Pan offers two bays — Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi — considered among the most beautiful on the island. Accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to a growing number of wellness resorts built around yoga, detox, and meditation programmes.

Getting to Koh Phangan

The most convenient route is the short ferry from Koh Samui — we run this crossing daily, and the crossing takes under an hour. From the mainland, direct ferries from Surat Thani reach Koh Phangan without changing boats. Travellers coming from Bangkok or Phuket typically reach the ferry piers by overnight train, coach, or a short domestic flight to Samui, then connect across to Phangan with us.
